Open Source Arts Elevate Residency
Residency at Open Source Arts march 2024. This was completed as part of ‘Bopit!’
Unlike our usual work together, Nathan and I decided to make responsive work, recording sounds from inside the building as well as the surrounding area, to create an abstracted archive of Open Source Arts. The decision to work around this brief came from the liminality and impermanence of OSA, due to the upcoming closure of all the creative buildings on that area of Kirkstall Road, for redevelopment. We decided to start by ‘finding the frequency of the room’ this was done by humming at different frequencies, and holding the larger surfaces of the main room. Apparently when you are able to feel the vibration in your arms you are close to the frequency. We came up with about 343hz which we settled on F as the key we would create all our sound work in. We secondly recorded ourselves moving around the room, and took the BPM from this recordingto develop a sound piece. After documenting sound in the room, we then turned these sounds into MIDIs to play with. We developed a long sound live sound piece.
We equally did this outdoors with the canal, which I additionally created some visuals for from footage I shot of the canal.
We collaborated with artist Delilah Sykes on some responsive sound work.
The residency resulted in a sharing with studio holders, leading them through sound baths, writing exercises and creative meditative activites.
